    Technology

    An optical tensiometer records drop images and analyzes the drop shape automatically. The drop shape is a function of the surface tension of the liquid, gravity and the density. On a solid, the drop shape and the contact angle also depends on the properties of the solid (e.g. surface free energy, topography). The captured image is analyzed with a drop profile fitting method in order to determine contact angle and surface tension. Surface free energy can be calculated by performing contact angle measurements with several known liquids.

    As an optical method, the measurement precision of optical tensiometers depends on the quality of the pictures and the analysis software. Attension Optical Tensiometers utilize a high quality monochromatic cold LED light source to minimize undesirable sample evaporation. Image quality is guaranteed by a high-resolution digital camera, quality optics and the accuracy of the drop fitting method.

    The most popular Brookfield viscometer now measures gel time using unique magnetic coupling that attaches the glass rod to instrument. When gel time is reached, display shows both gel time and equivalent viscosity value. Glass rod is quickly and easily detached from instrument.  Integrated temperature probe provides peak exotherm data if needed.

    Gel Timer DV2T comes with glass measurement rod, compression-fit glass rod adapter, lab stand with adjustable stop for quickly positioning glass rod at proper immersion depth in test sample, and temperature probe. Test method can be run either manually or using program stored in instrument memory. Accuracy and reliability of Gel Timer DV2T make this instrument the preferred choice in QC for measuring gel coats, resins, and potting compounds. Viscosity data generated during the test may also prove helpful for complete characterization of material flow behavior.

    Each of our standard Laboratory Viscometers/ Rheometers are supplied with an internal spring used to calculate the viscosity of a material. These springs have different measuring capabilities:

    • LV is for low viscosity materials and can measure the thinnest materials. Typical examples include inks, oils, and solvents.
    • RV is for medium viscosity materials than those measured with an LV torque. Typical examples include creams, food, and paints.
    • HA is for higher viscosity materials than those measured with an RV torque. Typical examples include gels, chocolate and epoxies.
    • HB is for even higher viscosity materials than those measured with an HA torque spring. Typical examples include asphalt, caulking compounds, and molasses.
